Every day when he leaves for Wayne
State University, the 75-year-old emer-
itus professor of physics puts on his
helmet.
Referring to the 24-mile, round-
trip commute from his Huntington
Woods home, Harry Denman says,
"With all of the construction, rocks
and holes in the road, the ride isn't as
pleasant as it used to be. But this way
I am not polluting the air, and don't
occupy a parking space near the
physics building."
Denman started riding seriously at
age 45. he retired his three-speed
English racer for a lightweight 10-
speed. Twenty-five years later, at age
70, he joined a Pacific-Atlantic tour:
2,900 miles from San Diego, Calif., to
Charleston, S.C. The riders averaged
125 miles per day for 23 days.
Two years ago, at age 73, Denman
joined four 70-year-olds for a Race
Across America, from Los Angeles,
Calif., to Savannah, Ga. He alternated
with his partner in eight-hour stints,
covering 750 miles in- nine days and
one hour.
His favorite local rides are Saturday

They call themselves "The
Cyclomaniacs." They are brothers-in-
law: certified public accountant Ely
Tama and Ken Manko, the 53-year-
old owner of the Print House Inc. in
Farmington Hills.
They started riding 15 years ago, but
became serious riders 10 years ago after
running injuries took their toll. Both
have run the Detroit marathon but
Tama has done Boston three times.
Now their annual cycling trips take
them to Vermont, Arizona and most
recently Texas. When on vacation but
not riding, they work out at local
Jewish community centers.
A charity ride started them on
long-distance biking 10 years ago.
Looking for a good ride, they entered
the MS 150 Bike Tour, a benefit for
multiple sclerosis research. Tama has
become the top fund-raiser for the
annual 200 mile portion, raising
$131,000 during the past 10 years.
"Every Saturday and Sunday, we ride
for three hours or so to Howell,
Whitmore Lake, Ann Arbor or Fenton,"
says Manko. "We travel up to Hell,
Traverse City or Cheboygan. You learn
to listen to your body and cycle through
the pain and fatigue." Li
