F Hooray For The New Americans lag Day is certainly the time to get patriotic, but this year brought new meaning for those who recently earned their American citizenship. Fellow students from their English as a Second Language class honored the new Americans in a program held June 14 at the Oak Park building of the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit. In addition to reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing patriotic songs; the group enjoyed a red, white and blue dessert of blueberries and strawberries in white cups. ❑ — Kerri Guten Cohen, story development editor Anna Shmidt of Southfield joins the group in say- ing the Pledge of Allegiance. Here's To... Beth Schwartz, a junior at the University of Michigan, has won the UMTA Celebrate Playwriting Award from the university's theater depart- ment. Schwartz is writing a play tided Dreamers about the Holocaust. She was also awarded the Robert and Gertrude Berman Israel Youth schol- arship from Adat Shalom Synagogue, which will be used toward her Jewish studies major at U-M. Jessica Rothenberg of Farmington Hills received an outstanding achieve- ment award from Meadowbrook Elementary School for academic excellence and her attitude toward education and acceptance of others. English instruc- tor Sheila Kohn of Huntington Woods chats with some par- ticipants. Howie Kahn of West Bloomfield received a Hopwood Award from the University of Michigan in the area of non-fiction/essay. The $5,000 prize was granted for the submission of two essays in the contest for aspiring writers. "Back to a Beautiful End" was an essay written about Kahn's grandfa- Howie Kahn ther Barney Kasoff, 99. "From My Window: An Elegy" focused on discrimination and hate crimes. Morgenstern Greenebaum, formerly of Bldomfield Township and a gradu- ate student at the New York University Film School, has received an award for art directing at New York Magazine's First Run Festival of Film, Video and Animation. Greenebaum wrote and directed Surprise Party. United Way Community Services elected new members to its board of directors and presented honors to outstanding community programs at its recent meeting. Ira Jaffe, manag- ing partner at Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer & Weiss is new to the board. The Richard E Huegli Award for Program Excellence was awarded to Gilda's Club of Metropolitan Detroit for innovative approaches and risk-taking with proven problem-solving results and to HAVEN (Help Against Violent Encounters Now) for its help to abuse victims in regaining their lives and its work to eliminate domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse through treatment and prevention services. Lauren Epstein of West Bloomfield has accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She will be honored in the fall during a campus ceremony at the University of Michigan. Jason Epstein, class of 2001 at West Bloomfield High School, has been selected to participate in the National Student Leadership Conference on Law and Advocacy, a leadership development program for high school students.
