ing her master's degree and working
toward a doctorate, she says, "I really
wanted to enhance and bring forward
my Jewish education."
Ginsberg says she also focused for
many years on secular studies. With her
recent retirement from teaching came
the time for something she had wanted
to do for many years — continue her
religious education.
"I wanted to have increased profi-
ciency in reading and understanding
Hebrew," says Ginsberg, who first saw
the class as preparation for a ceremony
— a goal to accomplish.
"But my interest has been stimulat-
ed," she says. "This became the start of
a journey I hope will continue the rest
of my life."
The day after the group ceremony,
Mary Knoll, Sandy Lada and Ilene
Miles were honored with aliyot in a
Shabbat-Shavuot service at Shaarey
Zedek B'nai Israel, where Lada also
read a Torah portion. Mary Knoll read
the Prayer for Israel, working with a
tutor to be able to read it in Hebrew.
Their spouses sponsored a kiddush;
about a dozen of the classmates attend-
ed. Rabbi Bitran read the names of all
23, and Pont once again addressed the
congregation.

Learning Continues

Many, like Miles and Ginsberg, plan to
continue their Jewish studies.
"This is just a step in my lifelong
learning," says Ginsberg, who hopes to
study Kabbala [Jewish mysticism],
Jewish history and philosophy and
search for a deeper understanding of
Judaism.
Partney, who says he is close with his
congregation and clergy, watched his
own children and granddaughter as
they became b'nai mitzvah. Being part
of the class not only helped him to read
and follow along better in the service,
but it filled a nearly lifelong void.
He felt something was missing
because he never had a bar mitzvah.
"Now I feel complete," Partney says.
The adult b'nai mitzvah classes are a
project of the Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood
and Men's Clubs. Members of the class
of 2000 are Vicki Adler, Gregory
Brown, NanLy Brown, Eileen Gors
Epstein, Judith Ginsberg, Rochelle
