For her 12 years of devoted service
at the Jewish Family Service's
Margot and Warren Coville
Apartments, Sylvia Mevis was named
Employee of the Year at JFS.
Mevis was cited by the committee
of past employees of the year as
"consistently performing above and
beyond her required duties." The
Coville Assisted Living Apartments
provides a shared-living experience
allowing older adults to live inde-
pendently while receiving supervi-
sion and individual care from a
trained geriatric care worker.

New Principal
At Scotch School

Brian Kaplan of Orchard Lake has
been named principal of Scotch
Elementary School, following action
taken by the
board of educa-
tion at its June 5
meeting. Kaplan
will replace Bob
Pyles, who was
earlier named to
lead Abbott
Middle School.
Kaplan served
as assistant prin-
cipal at Abbott
for four years.
Prior to that, he held the same role
at Orchard Lake Middle School and
earlier served as administrative assis-
tant and teacher at Scotch. He also
taught at the district's Green
Elementary School and in Las Vegas.
At Abbott, Kaplan coordinated
the Roosevelt Area Task Force
Report, Title 1 After-School pro-
grams (winning the Michigan
Association of School Boards' Rising
Star Award) and the Special
Education Child Study Team and
chaired the NCA Steering commit-
tee. Kaplan also led the Unity in the
Community program that won the
first Youth Dove Award from the
Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-
Christian Studies.
An education major, Kaplan
earned his bachelor of arts degree at
Michigan State University. His mas-
ter of education degree is from the
University of Nevada in Las Vegas,
where he majored in educational
administration.
