Defining Beautiful

e are told that "Beauty is
in the eyes of the
beholder" and that
"Beauty is only
skin deep." Why then are we
surprised by some of the
"beautiful" things that
surround us these days.
Consider ...
If you are asking your-
self where all the beautiful
people have gone, you are
probably searching out those
who are wearing the fashion
trends reported in the media fol-
lowing each new style show in
New York, Paris or Milan. You A beauty calibrator.
mean you are not wearing
your pants buckled five inches
below your waist or that you are shunning necklines
and hemlines that meet?
If you have not honed your appreciation of art, try
visiting a museum of contemporary art and take in
the exhibit of varying hues of toilets, vacuum cleaners
submerged in tanks of water or cow innards on a
spike.
There are some "beautiful sights" that we must
accept on faith, especially as seen through the eyes of
children. For instance, kids really do like blue gelatin
with gummy fish "floating" in it and cereal with green
moons.
If you want to see something truly beautiful, take a
good look at some of our senior citizens. Their silver
hair, wonderful laugh lines and twinkling eyes reflect
years of wisdom and senses of humor. As Kahil
Gibran said, "Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a
light in the heart."
Of course, there is no arguing that "my grandchil-
dren are the most beautiful in the- world" — that
phrase may be used with impunity by any grandpar-
ent on earth and supported by myriad pictures of the
children's children that just happen to grace our pock-
ets. Now, there's beauty for you! ❑
