Birthright Death
Tax Dollars OK
For Religious Schools From Meningitis

Washington/JTA — Taxpayer money
can be used to buy computers and
other instructional materials for reli-
gious schools, the U.S. Supreme
Court ruled.
Wednesday's 6-3 ruling overturned
- two high court decisions from the
1970s that banned such use of taxpay-
er funds.

Boy Scouts Can
Exclude Gay Leaders

Washington/JTA — The Boy Scouts
have the right to exclude gays as troop
leaders, according to a 5-4 U.S.
Supreme Court vote. The ruling
upheld the right of private groups to
set their own moral code.
The Orthodox Union had filed a
brief to the court supporting the Boy
Scouts' decision to fire a gay rights
activist as a scoutmaster.

UJC Seeks Support
For 'Iran 13'

Jerusalem/JTA — The United Jewish
Communities, a Jewish umbrella group,
is circulating an online petition at
wwvv.ujc.org in support of 13 Iranian
Jews accused of spying for Israel.
The judge presiding over the trial
told Tehran Radio that a verdict will
be issued soon.

Foreign Investments
Rise In Israel

Jerusalem/JTA — Foreign investment
in Israel totaled $4.31 billion during the
first five months of the year, compared
with $2.06 billion in the same period of
1999, according to the Bank of Israel.
For all of 1999, foreign investment
totaled $4.85 billion, the bank said.

Jerusalem/JTA — Thousands of
Israelis took part in the annual gay
pride parade June 23 in Tel Aviv.
Rabin Square was lined with Israeli
flags and the rainbow banners of the
gay pride movement. Techno pop
music blared from loudspeakers
mounted on trucks.

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's Health
Ministry said it is unlikely that a
Birthright Israel participant who died
of meningitis after returning to the
United States spread the disease to
others in the group.
Joseph Ferraro, 20, of Rochester,
N.Y., had been touring the country
under a program that gives young
Jews free 10-day trips to Israel.
Hillel: The Foundation for Campus
Jewish Life, which helped bring
Ferraro to the country, notified every-
one on the trip who had close contact
with Ferraro to see a physician.

Yahoo! Balks
At Court Ruling

Paris/JTA — The co-founder of
Yahoo! said he has no plans to com
ply with a French court's ruling that
the Internet portal stop Web surfers
in France from gaining access to a
site it hosts where Nazi memorabilia
is sold.
"We are not going to change the con-
tent of our sites in the United States
just because someone in France is ask-
ing us to do so," Jerry Yang recently
told the French daily Liberation.

NHL Picks
An Israeli

Jerusalem/JTA — An immigrant to
Israel from Kazakhstan was picked in
the third round by the New Jersey
Devils in the recent National Hockey
League draft.
It is believed that Max Birbraer,
whose family kept its Jewish identity
secret when he was a child, would be
the first Israeli to play in the NHL if
he makes the team.

Rabbi Told
To Stay In Jail

New York/JTA — A New Jersey rabbi
who could face the death penalty for
allegedly contracting to murder his
wife must remain in jail while await-
ing his trial.
A judge ruled that Rabbi Fred
Neulander, charged in connection
with the 1994 murder, is more likely
to flee now that a grand jury indicted
him earlier this week.
