1697: South Carolina passes a law that claims to

grant equal settling rights to all persons — "male or
female, of what nation soever, which now are
enhabitants" of the state -- providing their parents
were born in England. Among those included in
this law are Jews (though Catholics are not).

1765:Touro Synagogue, the oldest extant syna-
gogue in this country, is dedicated. Initially, it is
called Yeshuat Israel, or Salvation of Israel.
