Country Club in West Bloomfield.
"This winter," says Madorsky, "I
played a little bit in California, but I
kept my swing in shape hitting balls
at one of the covered domes. The best
is playing golf with my husband. We
play nine holes at least two evenings
and another two rounds of 18 holes
during the week. I intend to play as
much as I can this summer."
Amateur golf is played by ordinary
people who often have extraordinary
responsibilities. Yet it is that occasion-
al entry into congenial competition
that keeps golfers on that mysterious
high of staying in the flow.
Sylvia Wohlman didn't start play-
ing golf until she was 32 but quickly
made up for lost time by devoting
herself to the game, practicing and
playing 18 or 36 holes every day.
After playing for several years, the
family joined Tam-O-Shanter in West
Bloomfield in the early `60s.
Wohlman, of West Bloomfield,
entered just about every competition
and was women's club champion for
eight years. She also gave back to the
game, serving as a board member of
the Women's District Association and
helped run the Women's State Amateur
for 10 years. Her lowest handicap was
10; today, at age 75, Wohlman has an
enviable 18 handicap.
"Golf was and is my therapy for
anything and everything," says
Wohlman. "The past two years have
been tough because my husband has
been very ill, requiring full-time care.
When we're in Florida and I get some
time off, I head for the many beauti-
ful public courses. The rates are very
reasonable.
"This summer, I'm going to get in as
much golf as I can," she says, "but it
will probably not be as often as I want."
Barbara Robinson had an even
later start at the game. This is only
her second year of golf and she's
already telling golf jokes. Robinson,
of West Bloomfield, is hooked.
"A friend introduced me to the
game, and I was fascinated watching
someone play and enjoying it so much.
The ins and outs of where to hit the
ball and how to hit the ball were
intriguing," Robinson says. "It wasn't
just physical skill, it was also strategy.
"Right now it's purely a physical
challenge for me; I'm a beginner, but
the fun is in learning these skills. The
fun is also playing with friends and
being outdoors."
Paul Tisdale of Farmington drives
40-45 minutes each way to play 18
holes at his golf club. Paul belongs to
Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc. He
says there are about 275 families who
belong to the club and about a dozen
of them are Jewish.
"I love Warwick because I don't
have to make tee times and I never
have to wait to tee off," says Tisdale,
who started playing golf as a teen.
Mary Schwartz and her husband,
Burt, started playing golf about 10
years ago. "Learning to play this game
has been and is tough for me," says
Mary, of West Bloomfield. "My hus-
band excelled at it much faster and I
kept getting more frustrated. I thought
about quitting more than once but I
stayed with it because it was an activity
we could do together."
