with Adat Shalom Synagogue's Rosh
Pina Award following the recent
installation of officers and board
members. The newly created award
recognizes one member's longstand-
ing leadership and
service to the syna-
gogue. Rabbi
Daniel Nevins made
the first-time pre-
sentation to Judge
Kaufman.
"The greatest
asset that any con-
gregation can have
is its members,
Judge Ira
Rabbi Nevins said.
Kaufman
"If a congregation is
blessed, it will have
a core of leaders who can guide its
formation and sustain its growth and
stability. But rare is the congregant
who is present at the foundation and
remains an active leader and an
enduring inspiration for more than
55 years.
"From the first days of the
Northwest Hebrew Congregation
and Center, Judge Kaufman has been
a dedicated leader. He was the sec-
ond president of our first organiza-
tion and the first president of Adat
Shalom. He was the founder and
first president of our men's club, and
it was through his personal efforts
that our Memorial Park was
acquired. Prior to the selection of the
congregation's first rabbi, the late
Jacob Segal, Judge Kaufman deliv-
ered sermons for a year and a half,
and he has been a steadfast supporter
ever since."
Judge Kaufman received a scale
model of the Second Temple in
Jerusalem along with a plaque
acknowledgingthe congregation's
gratitude.
Nine additional congregants were
presented with volunteer service
awards. Nita Lichtenstein won for
supervising arrangements for the
congregation's weekly Kiddush;
Helen Bayles, Ethel Droz, Frances
Foster, Ann Rudy and Ella Shriman,
for assisting in Kiddush preparations;
Morrie Neuvirth for longstanding
service as aliya chairman; Mikulas
Judikovic for service as a Shabbat
morning usher; and Dorothy
Storchan for leadership of
ChaZaKaH/Yourig-at-Heart, the
Adat Shalom seniors group.
