ontinuing passion for the
game is a commodity
shared by golfers. Persistent,
unrealistic expectations
probably runs a close second.
Harvey Rubenstein was an athlete
as a teen, as a young adult, and con-
tinues to achieve athletic goals in mid-
dle age, such as qualifying for the
Boston Marathon. He recently
received a new set of golf clubs from
his wife, Sharon, for his 60th birthday.
"I haven't purchased new clubs in
30 years," says Rubenstein who teach-
es physical education at Covington
Middle School in the Birmingham
school district. "1 bought my first set
of clubs at Carl's Golfland [in
Bloomfield Hills] when I played on
the [Detroit] Mumford High and
Wayne State University teams back in

the '50s and '60s and I bought this set
at the same place. I intend to purchase
my next set there in another 30 years.
"In the meantime, with these
clubs, no one can beat me because of
technology anymore. Skill maybe."
Rubenstein, of West Bloomfield,
doesn't have much time to play. He'll
play one of the Southfield public
courses or nine holes at Glen Oaks in
Farmington Hills near his home
when he has a couple of free hours.
"I like to walk and carry my bag,"
says Rubenstein. "You meet nice peo-
ple at golf courses. Even so, it's always
more fun when you can hit the ball
on the sweet spot."
Most golfers have no idea why the
game is so mesmerizing. Roberta
Madorsky of Bloomfield Hills started
playing golf when she was 7 years old.
"I love hitting the ball," says
Madorsky, who made her mark as five-
time women's champion at Knollwood
