Aish Fire
Spurs Relief

Bloomfield Township — The Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
has opened a mailbox to assist in the
rebuilding of an Aish HaTorah center
in Kiev, Ukraine, which was destroyed
in a fire June 2.
No one was injured in the blaze,
but massive material damage was
incurred. The quarters of the syna-
gogue and the yeshiva, two Torah
scrolls, the synagogue's library of more
than 1,000 books of Judaic literature,
furniture, tefillin, mezuzas and other
precious belongings were destroyed.
The cause of the fire has not yet
been determined.
The center, which opened Dec. 5,
1999, has more than 500 members.
Recently, a group of young leaders
from Michigan visited the central
Galilee and Jerusalem with profession-
als and Hillel students from Kiev
through the Jewish Federation's
Partnership 2000 program. The three
communities planned future pro-
grams, including a Chanuka celebra-
tion in Kiev. One of the members of
this triangular leadership program is
the chairman for the Aish HaTorah
Center in Kiev.

Hadassah Ends
AZM Support

New York/JTA — A coalition of
American Zionist organizations has
lost one of its largest members.
Hadassah, the Women's Zionist
Organization of America, which has
300,000 members and is best known
for its hospitals in Israel, is pulling out
of the American Zionist Movement.
Hadassah leaders declined to elabo-
rate on the reasons, saying only that
the AZM "no longer serves the best
interests of Hadassah's Zionist goals or
the future of American Zionism" and
that Hadassah will continue to partici-
pate in the World Zionist
Organization.
