hough popular and inspiring, he hasn't
sought the spotlight. Instead, Rabbi
Arnie Sleutelberg has been content to let
Congregation Shir Tikvah members com-
mand center stage.
So as proud as he is of the Troy synagogue's
new outdoor sanctuary, he opted to be one of

recount how the simple, yet beautiful place
for prayer came to be. In 'Spirituality (page
61), Special Writer Lisa Fein shares that story.
Shir Tikvah, born determinedly in a Troy parking lot 17 years
ago and for a long time a church tenant, now has more than 300
families and a permanent home. But it has never wavered from
helping Jews, whatever their background, experience God through
Torah, ritual and camaraderie.
As Shir Tikvah prepares to dedicate its skylit sanctuary this
Shabbat afternoon, it's an apt time to say yasher koach to Rabbi
Arnie, always a source of spiritual energy.

Scholarly And Approachable

T

hey call him Rav in deference to Abba Arikha, a Babylonian
an
during the time after the destruction of the Second
Temple in 70 AD.
But Rabbi Shmuel Irons, co-founder of the Kollel Institute of
Greater Detroit 26 years ago, is more than a worldly scholar.
He's also a mentsh.
He's a man whose devotion to Torah, vigor for learning Jewishly
and ability to connect with all Jews have endeared him to Detroit
Jewry. He's struck not by your range of knowledge, but rather your
hunger to learn.
So it's not surprising Rabbi Avrohom Jacobovitz' Machon
L'Torah, the. Oak Park-based Jewish Learning Network of
Michigan, will give Rabbi Irons its highest honor, the Crown of
Life, next Tuesday. Special Writer Susan Tawil profiles the award
winner in Spirituality (page 62).
"Ray" Irons has done as much as anyone to instill Jewish identi-
ty and validate religious pluralism.

n what has become an annual tradition, this week's cover story (page 74) looks at some of the
best new summer fiction and nonfiction titles with Jewish themes. Summer is a short season with

long days and, hopefully, the time to kick back and enjoy the outdoors on the deck, patio or
by the pool — preferably with a good book. We wanted to keep the reading on the light
side to complement the hazy, lazy days that lie ahead.
As Special Writer Judith Bolton-Fasman notes, summer books — like suntan lotion —
come with their own SPF: Sheer Pleasure Factor. Books with a high SPF leave readers not only
relaxed, but enlightened.

And if we've introduced you to a book that results in a high SPF, well, the pleasure was ours.
