Loewenstein
Is Honored

Gleaners Community Food Bank
President Rick Loewenstein of West
Bloomfield is a "Giraffe Hero" to
fourth graders at Brooklands
Elementary School in Rochester
Hills. He received a special reward
when he spoke to the students on
June 5.
Giraffes are people from ages 8 to
108 who have stuck their necks out
for the common good, working on
diverse issues. Sherry Feldman, a
fourth-grade teacher at Brooklands,
coordinates the Giraffe Heroes pro-
ject. The curriculum encourages stu-
dents to find real heroes in their
schools, families and community.
Loewenstein was selected to
become a Giraffe Hero for leaving a
for-profit family business to tackle
the issue of hunger in Michigan. He
shared his story with the children
and told them what they can do to
become courageous, compassionate
leaders.
Gleaners Community Food Bank,
at 2131 Beaufait in Detroit, distrib-
utes 19 million pounds of food
annually to 300 feeding agencies
throughout southeastern Michigan.

Outdoor Sanctuary
Being Dedicated

Congregation Shir Tikvah will dedi-
cate its new outdoor sanctuary at
noon Saturday, June 24, after morn-
ing services.
The treed setting for the syna-
gogue building and floor-to-ceiling
windows encasing the indoor sanctu-
ary allow participants to experience
God and nature.
The outdoor sanctuary will be
dedicated in the memory of Leo
Coskey and Dr. Ralph Coskey. The
ark that holds the Torah was hol-
lowed out from a maple tree. The
cobblestone floor is in the shape of a
Kiddush cup, which symbolizes cele-
bration. Seats are benches carved
from native Michigan trees, large
stones or tree trunks. A country lane
leads from the main building to the
outdoor sanctuary. A mezuza from a
900-year-old oak tree from
Jerusalem is attached to two trees
that serve as the "gates" to the sanc-
tuary.
The public is invited to the dedi-
cation. For information, call the
temple office, (248) 649-4418.
