should judge us not by whether we were
noble descendants of a great heritage,
but whether we proved to be worthy
ancestors to future generations, to
whom we have given the knowledge and
the pride to live as Jews. That is our
dream. David and Doreen, you have
enabled us to renew our faith in the
dream of the Jewish people and our abil-
ity to make the dream come true."
Gazing into the sanctuary of 1,200
people who had come to honor one of
Detroit Jewry's most beloved couples,
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit President Penny Blumenstein
said, "At the dawn of a new century, our
joint efforts will strengthen and secure
Jewish life for us and those we love."
There's no mistaking the Hermelins'
commitment to Jewish education or
Hillel Day. School. Their support for
Jewish learning spans the streams of
Judaism. At Hillel, the Goldman-
Hermelin Education Foundation allows
any child who wants to learn to do so,
without regard for family income. The
newly announced Ambassador David
and Doreen Hermelin Excellence in
Education Fund will enrich program-
ming and opportunities.
Hillel students over the years have
included Hermelin children and grand-
children; grandson Matthew Orley was
among this year's graduates. In all, there
are five children and eight grandchil-
dren.
Not only have the Hermelins "been
strong advocates of the importance of
Hillel as a community resource,"
Headmaster Dr. Mark Smiley said, "but
they have mentored a generation of
leaders to be passionate and committed
to day school education. At the end of
the day, they are two Hillel Day School
grandparents who knell [rejoice] in the
accomplishments and successes of their
children and grandchildren."
Doreen described the couple's 30-year
service to Hillel as "an adventure that
we've loved."
She said her family's pride in Judaism
"has helped David and I develop our
faith in our tradition and heritage."
"We're so touched," David said.
"This is an extraordinary community."
Struck by the fact that more than
100 of Hillel's 770 students are children
of Hillel alumni, David said: "So many
have sacrificed to provide a Hillel educa-
tion. I hope for the day when all parents
who want a Hillel education for their
children can have one, without regard
for finances."
In closing, he said, "Be strong, be
strong and let that strength carry us for-
ward to that great Hillel Day School tra-
dition."❑
