Mark Schlussel:
"What I love about
painting is that there's
a sense of completion."

"There is the persona
that everybody knows
who is disciplined and
works within lines and
borders, expressed in the
geometric designs," says
Schlussel of his acrylics
on canvas and paper.

"... There's also a more
playful side that comes out
in the expressionist works."

"That piece still hangs in our
house," Schlussel says. "We love to go
to galleries, even when we're out of
town, and we don't look for names.
We look for things we enjoy."
The Schlussels' collection, which
concentrates on impressionist and
modern renderings, has been joined
with the products of his new interest.
When the house seemed to be brim-
ming with Schlussel's signature pieces,
he approached Charles Uzelac, who
liked them and offered gallery space
for a show.
"The opportunity to have this show
is an extraordinary goal that I thought
I would never achieve," says Schlussel,
the father of four and grandfather of
five. "I believe that I have a Jewish
spiritual soul, and that's probably in
all of my work.
"What I love about painting is that
there's a sense of completion. There's
something finite. It's not just ongoing.
I love the idea that I can start a pro-
ject — some took me a month or two
and others took just days — and
there's a finality about it. In my law
practice with Pepper Hamilton and in

business, the process of my work is a
continuum."'
Schlussel usually paints during the
evening hours, a time span that used
to be taken by numerous service corn-
mittees based in the Jewish communi-
ty He decided to cut back somewhat
on his communal work and leave the
spots to newer members.
Hoping that gallery visitors will like
his work, Schlussel believes he has had
the best commentary already.
Granddaughter Meredith Berlin, stay-
ing at his home while hers was being
remodeled, had four of Schlussel's
paintings in her room. After he took
them down and put them on display,
she wanted them back.
"I find it very spiritual and energizing
to create something," Schlussel says. El
