Washington/JTA—A man who told
the U.S. television show 60 Minutes
that he could prove Iran was responsi-
ble for the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103
bombing that killed 270 people is an
impostor, according to CIA and FBI
sources quoted in the Washington

Post.
The man, who claimed he was a
former Iranian intelligence officer,
"lacks bdsic knowledge of Iran's intel-
ligence apparatus" and "has been
lying about lots of stuff," according
to one senior U.S. official.

Retract Confessions

New York/JTA — Four of the 13
Iranian Jews accused of spying for
Israel retracted their "confessions" in
court, according to an American
advocate.
Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice
chairman of the Conference of
Presidents of Major American Jewish
Organizations, said the four told the
Iranian judge that their "confessions"
had been made under duress.
A Muslim accused of collaborating
with the 13 also denied the charges.

most influential high-tech hub in the
world, according to Wired magazine.
Silicon Valley in California, Boston
and Stockhclm-Kista were ranked as
the top three.
The survey was based on the abili-

New York/JTA — Seven Jewish
cyclists Of varying ages and back-
grounds pedaled away from Seattle,
launching a cross-country bike ride to
draw attention to Jewish teachings on
environmentalism.
The bikers, who were organized by

the New York-based Jewish group
Hazon, plan to ride the entire sum-
mer, traveling 3,800 miles from
Seattle to the nation's capital. They
also plan to lead classes and programs
at communities along the way.

Candles Sparked
Deadly Fire

New York/JTA — Investigators said
candles lit for the holiday of Shavuot
helped to start a Brooklyn fire that
killed the granddaughter and great-
granddaughter of Rabbi Moses
Teitelbaum, the leader of the Satmar
Chasidic group.
"Everybody is walking with their
heads down," said one resident of
Williamsburg, where Sara Blima
Halverstam and her 5-month-old
daughter died.

Ad Promotes
Shabbat Work

Jerusalem/JTA — Young Israeli Jews
should be allowed to flip burgers for
McDonald's on the Sabbath, accord-
ing to a newspaper ad taken out by
the company's Israeli franchise.
"Stop capitulating to Shas or Israel
will turn into Iran," said the ad in
Yediot Achronot, referring to the
Orthodox political party.
In the ad, the managing director of
McDonald's Israel, which operates
several non-kosher and kosher restau-
rants in the Jewish state, estimates
that he has paid $20,000 in fines for
employing Jewish teen-agers on the
Sabbath.

Hadassah Urges
Women's Rights

Washington/JTA—A leading U.S.
Jewish group called on the U.S.
Congress to ratify an international
law protecting the rights of women.
The call by Hadassah, the
Women's Zionist Organization of
America, to pass the Convention on
the Elimination of All Forms of
Discrimination Against Women
came last week as a U.N. conference
on women was meeting in New
York. Hadassah also called on
Congress to approve funding for the
continuation and expansion of the
Violence Against Women Act,
which supports victims of domestic
violence.
