Because Doreen and David Hermelin are two of the dream makers, they received the 2000 Dream Maker Award from Hillel Day School as well as the Rabbi Jacob E. Segal Award. (The late Rabbi Segal was one of the school's founders.) More than 1,200 patrons attended the June 6 event at Cong. Shaarey Zedek, which was the largest crowd for the annu- al dinner in the school's history. Marcie and Robert Orley, daughter and son- in-law of the Hermelins, were the dinner chairmen. The evening began with a lavish cocktail hour set up in tents. Fred Blechman, Federation President Penny Blumenstein, Headmaster Dr. Mark Smiley, Eighth Grade Speaker Ariella Lis and Rabbi Irwin Groner. "David and Doreen are our beloved heroes," said Rabbi Groner. Many of the speakers reiterated their acts of kindness, vision, commitment and compassion. A highlight of the evening was a video presentation about the Hermelin clan, from David and Doreen's first meeting at Camp Tamakwa to their wedding, and to their stay in Norway when David served as U.S. ambassador. Some of the volunteers who helped make the Hillel 2000 annual cam- paign successful included Stacy Brodsky, Lisa and Scott Dresner, Rhonda and Jerry Byer, Jtdi and Rob Goodman, Cheryl and Dan Guyer, Susan and Larry Slabotsky, Tammy Gorosh, Phyllis Pilcowitz, Michele Borovoy, Beth Margolin and Steve Schlafer. STARLIGHT SOIREE Temple Beth El is creating a new tra- dition with ca yearly gala auction. The first "Starlight Soiree" will be held 7 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at the syna- gogue, featuring the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. The event will include dinner and silent and live auctions. ALS ART AUCTION An art auction to benefit ALS of Michigan (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and ALS research at the University of Michigan Medical Center was recently held at the Parthenon House in West Bloomfield. The event raised more than $90,000, tripling last year's pro- ceeds. Jody and Barry Rogow, Lisa and Mark Rosenberg were event co-chair- men. They chaired the event in mem- ory of loved ones who succumbed to the disease. Jody Rogow's father, Jerry Klask, passed away in February 1999, and Lisa Rosenberg's father, Sanford Roth, passed away in April 2000. Some of the ALS supporters included Rick and Ricki Rogow, David and Maura Levine, Mindy and Jack Cherney, Eva and Paul Freed, Dr. Gary Burstein and Audrey Burstein. ❑
