Elects Leaders

Jo-Ann MacWilliams-Wolf will assume
the presidency of the Temple Beth El
Sisterhood on May 25.
She is a
direct descen-
dent of the
Cozens family,
founders of
Beth El. Her
volunteer corn-
mitment to
temple extends
back to her teen
years when she
served as vice
Jo-Ann
president of the MacWilliams-Wolf
Young People's
Society and rep-
resented the group on the temple board.
She has been actively involved in sis-
terhood, serving as vice president of pro-
gramming in 1998 and administrative
vice president in 1999. She was co-chair
of the temple's 1997 Pleasures of the
Palate.
Also serving will be vice presidents
Patti Kommel, Susan Trigger, Karen
Hull and Mimi Berger. Other officers
include treasurers Lori Abel and Joan
Halpern; secretaries Laurie Nedelman,
Lois Freeman and Fayclare Blau.
Newly installed members of the
board are Linda Berman, Linda Bloom,
Denny Brown, Debbie Canvasser,
Laurel Epstein, Sharon Goldenberg,
Karen Kaczander, Sue Kessler, Linda
Koby, Karen Lowen, Gail Mayer, Joyce

Carolyn Greenberg, Laura Korotkin
and Sharon Sidder have been elected to
serve on the 2000 20001 nominating
committee.

The Detroit Jewish Coalition for
Literacy is looking for volunteers for
this summer.
Volunteers are needed to work
with children in the Detroit,
Ferndale, Hazel Park, Madison
Heights, Oak Park, Pontiac and
Southfield school districts. Program
hours and location are flexible and
no previous experience is necessary.
The DJCL is an umbrella for 21
organizational partners working to
increase the Jewish community's
fight against illiteracy by mobilizing

Na'amat USA Greater Detroit Council
has received a bequest of $600,000
from the estate of Gertrude Green, a
longtime member who served as presi-
dent of the Golda Meir Chapter. She
was also active in Israel Bonds and
with Beth Abraham Synagogue.
The bequest, given in the name of
Gertrude Green and her late husband
Julius, has been designated for
Na'amat's newest women's center, to
be built in Ashdod.

Young Israel Names Honorees

Young Israel of Oak Park and Young Israel of Southfield will hold their
10th annual joint dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at the Michigan
Inn, Southfield.
This year's honorees are Miriam and Sol Hoberman and Betty Rose
and Mordechai Eisenberg. The event will feature a strolling dinner and
entertainment by mentalist Gerry McCambridge.

Literacy Program Needs Volunteers

Women's Action for New Directions
(WAND) will hold a panel discus-
sion to explore the consequences of
cutbacks by the federal government
in human and environmental ser-
vices 7:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday, June
15, at the National Council of
Jewish Women, 26400 Lahser Road,
Suite 100, Southfield. -
Moderating the forum will be
Bobbie Wrenn Banks of Atlanta,

volunteer readers, tutors and book
drive organizers. The coalition par-
ticipates in special efforts, such as
the Reach Out and Read program at
Providence Hospital as well as tutor-
ing/reading programs in 27 schools
in Oakland and Wayne counties.
Chaired by the Jewish
Community Council vice president
Ann Zousmer, the DJCL is an affili-
ate of the National.Jewish Coalition
for Literacy.
