the Barak government for its cavalier
response to U.S. concerns about the
Israel-China arms trade.
But that has changed in the wake
of growing indications the Pentagon
wants virtual veto power over new
Israeli arms exports, a condition the
government in Jerusalem is unlikely to
accept.
Despite White House unhappiness
about Israel's China deal, and despite
strong pressure from the Pentagon,
which is reportedly holding up the
transfer of some military equipment
because of the spat, President Bill
Clinton is unlikely to back Callahan's
bid, Jewish leaders say.
But they worry the President will
remain-silent, at least for now, in the
face of the lawmaker's threat as a way
of increasing the pressure on
Jerusalem.

Danforth For Veep -
Jewish Democrats aren't exactly

-

thrilled about the latest reported entry
into the Republican vice-presidential
sweepstakes: former Sen. John
Danforth (R-Mo).
The reason: despite a conservative
voting record, Danforth, an ordained
Episcopal priest, has the potential to
attract at least some Jewish voters who
would otherwise spurn the GOP tick-
et.
During his 18 years on Capitol
Hill, Danforth was liked and admired
by colleagues on both sides of the
aisle. He also built a strong record as a
supporter of Israel.
"He has an unimpeachable reputa-
tion for integrity," said a Democratic
activist. "He's the Republican's equiva-
lent of (Sen.) Joe Lieberman (D-
Conn.)."
"He satisfies some important quali-
fications," said Marshall Wittman, a
political analyst with the Heritage
Foundation. "He's a pro-lifer who has
centrist political perspective, and he
lives in a key political state. In the
Jewish community, his gravitas and
centrism will appeal to some."
And Wittman pointed out another
advantage of the Missourian: "The
first rule of the Bush campaign in
picking a vice presidential nominee is
this: Do no harm. Danforth definitely
meets that standard."
