hole to the horse trails, the ranch
has something for everyone. While
you can manage to do the trip in a
day if you arrive early and stay till
dusk, it's a long day for families
with smaller children. "There is so
much to see that it is certainly worth
staying overnight to relax and enjoy
the whole ranch," Barbara says.

Along The Way: The ride is only
three hours from the metro Detroit
area, but there are a host of family-

A Sandy Escape
Paula and Barry Mardit of Hunting-
ton Woods and their children,
Molly, 11, and Rosie, 7, head 25
miles past Traverse City to Sleeping
Bear Sand Dunes every summer. It's
about a four- to five-hour ride from
their home.
What They Like About It: "We
climb the huge, scenic sand dunes
and then we roll down and swim in
Lake Michigan on the other side."
Where The Mardits Lodge: "We
stay at the Grand Traverse Resort,
which is a great family-friendly spot.
There is an indoor pool, which is
great for rainy days, and we rent
own small powerboats.
Favorite Traverse City Escape: Take
U.S. Highway 31 north through Tra-
verse City to U.S. 37, going north.
At the end, you will find the Old
Mission Lighthouse, which is
halfway between the equator and
the North Pole.
"It is great getting away from the
town, and it is very peaceful there.
The children catch tadpoles, and
we just relax," Paula says. On the
way to the lighthouse, along the
country roads, you can stop at fruit
stands offering locally grown fruit.
Parental Cautions: Traverse City is
child friendly, but the sandy dunes
are very rigorous. Do not attempt
to climb with small children.
