How Can President Clinton's
National Security Adviser, Sandy Berger,
Call

HIS

"A Blessing"?

president Clinton's National Security Adviser, Sandy
1 Berger, told an audience at Tel Aviv University on May
21 that the recent Palestinian Arab violence --including
firebombings and shooting attacks against Israeli citizens--
"is both the curse and the blessing of the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict, for the tragedy that awaits in the event of inaction
also constitutes the greatest incentive for immediate action."
(As reported by United Press International, Israel Radio,
and Israel's largest daily, Yediot Ahronot.)

one of the Israeli victims of the recent Palestinian. Arab violence.

Should this be the position of the U.S. government
when a close ally's citizens are being shot at?

Arab terrorist violence is always a curse, and never a blessing.
Someone who believes there is some good or "blessing" in violence against an ally of the United States, has
crossed a red line. Sandy Berger should be relieved of his duties as National Security Adviser
unless he publicly retracts and apologizes for his appalling statement.

President Clinton himself should also publicly repudiate Berger's remark. Otherwise, Berger's statement
could encourage Arab terrorists to think that the Clinton administration believes there are positive aspects
to their violence. That is a wrong and dangerous impression to convey.

Mr. President: We urge you to replace Mr. Berger unless he retracts his statement!

Tell President Clinton &

Congress how you feel
