Eligibility for Nomination:

All Jewish communal professionals employed by
local constituent agencies of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit and other social welfare
agencies serving the Jewish community who have
been working in the Detroit Jewish community a
minimum of five years

Criteria for Selection:

The recipient of the Berman Award must
demonstrate the highest professional standards
in his/her chosen field. That professional must
have:

• made a contribution to the general good of
the Jewish community

• demonstrated leadership and innovation to
his/her profession

• applied creativity, dedication, knowledge
and care to providing services to the
Jewish community

Nomination Process:

Submit nominations by letter to
the Selection Committee. Names
of the nominees will remain
confidential, and they may be
renominated in subsequent years.

Nora Peisner of Huntington Woods is
the newly elected president of Detroit
Chapter, Brandeis
University National
Women's
Committee.
Other officers are
Rosalie Melman, vice
president, program-
ming; Sue Salesin,
vice president, book
fund; Harriet
Nora Peisner
Shogan, treasurer;
Beverly Sabbath,
assistant treasurer,
Fran Fisher and Florence Goode, finan-
cial secretaries.
The installation was performed by
Ilene Nemer and took place at the
membership luncheon on May 17.

Beverly Liss will assume the presidency
of Adat Shalom Synagogue at the con-
gregation's Installation Shabbat on
Friday, June 2.
Liss has been president of the
Women's Department of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
since 1998. She was campaign chairman
from 1996-1998 and was the first chair-
man of, and helped to create, the JFMD
Women's Choices program. She has
been on the Max M. Fisher Foundation
board and the executive committee of
the JFMD Board of Governors.
For service to the Federation, Liss was
recognized in 1987
with the Sylvia
Simon Greenberg
Young Leadership
Award. She has also
been active on the
boards of Hillel Day
School of
Metropolitan
Beverly Liss
Detroit, the Jewish
Community Center
of Metropolitan
Detroit, the Agency for Jewish
Education and Bar-Ilan.
Also elected at Adat Shalom's annual
meeting: Larry Wolfe, Tobi Fox, Paul
Magy, vice presidents; David Schostak,
recording secretary; Allan Nachman,
treasurer, Michael Gellis and Barbara
Kappy, executive committee members at
large.
Newly elected members of the board
of trustees are Larry Rockind, Jeff
Supowit and Gary Shiffman.
Mel Foster, Paul Goldsmith, Richard
Ketchel and Ralph Woronoff were elect-
ed to serve on the Memorial Park Board.
The Insrltlation Shabbat will begin
with a Kabbalat Shabbat service at 6
p.m. Dinner and the ceremony will fol-
low. Reservations are required. Carol
Weintraub Fogel will chair the evening
along with Magy and Supowit.

JCC Camps
Still Enrolling

The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit's summer camp
options are available for children ages 2
1/2-14.
.Imagitivity Camps are one-week spe-
cialty camps stressing arts and sciences.
Camps are age appropriate and trans-
portation is available.
The K'Ton Ton Preschool Camp is
for ages 2 1/2-4 and planned around
weekly themes. Children will enjoy
swimming, arts, crafts, recreation, games
and music.
The JCC offers camp programs for
kids in kindergarten- first grade
(Chaverim), second-third grades
(Keshet) and fourth-fifth grades (Teva).
JCC themed camps include Maccabi
Pro-Sports camps and various travel
camps. Mini-camps and extended care
are also available.

New Flag, New Citizens

Teitel Jewish Apartments in Oak
Park received a new American flag
and stand on Tuesday, May 10.
The presentation was made by
Shirley Schlussel, department presi-
dent of the Jewish War Veterans
Ladies Auxiliary, fellow members
and current and past officers. The
presentation included a copy of the
Bill of Rights for each Teitel resident
who became an American citizen

this past year.
Teitel Jewish. Apartments is a
housing development for seniors;
over 60 percent of them are immi-
grants from the former Soviet
Union. When they move into the
apartments, they are encouraged to
continue to improve their English
language skills and to study for the
citizenship test. Classes are held
onsite four days per week.
