Reflections on Torah
as Shavuot nears.

I is a hot summer day. The sun
is shining brightly, and you see
many people walking by. All of
the girls are dressed in tank
tops and shorts.
Suddenly, you see something that
catches your eye. It's a young girl,
dressed in a long-sleeved T-shirt and a
long skirt. You are
seeing me. You won-
der at the way I am
dressed. It's the sum-
mer! She must be
coming out of the
Dark Ages!
The answer is not
that I just have no
flair for style. The
answer is that this is
my way of life. The
Torah commands
women to dress mod-
estly; therefore, I do.

Sabbath. I don't call
my friends on the
phone, I don't watch
TV, and I don't go shopping at the
mall. But this is a day that _I look for-
ward to the entire week. During the
week, my father is very busy with
meetings and phone calls. But on
Friday night and Saturday, I know
he's completely ours. No phone calls
or things to disturb the delicious
meals. This is also the only time of
the week that I actually get a good
night's sleep.
This is what Torah teaching is to
me: It's the way I run my life. Every
item of clothing I buy, every action I
take, every word that comes out of
my mouth, are all influenced by the
Torah. When God chose us Jews to
receive the Torah on Mount Sinai,
He meant for us to learn it and keep
its laws. That's why, ever since an
early age, I've been learning and ful-
filling all the wonderful ways of
Judaism. My life is beautiful; I feel
like I'm living for a purpose. And the
truth is, I am. ❑
