Johnson author of the new book The Nazi Terror: Gestapo, Jews and Ordinary Germans June 6, 2000 7 to 9 p.m. • Temple Shir Shalom 3999 Walnut Lake Road West Bloomfield Sponsored by Temple Shir Shalom and the CMU Metro Detroit Alumni Association Johnson concluded that the actions of Germany's Ge- stapo officers were aimed at select groups of people for the slightest of infractions. The rest of the German people were exempt from these actions and maintained a "deplorable" but "understandable" silence. Johnson's research was motivated by a personal desire to learn what his father – an Air Force fighter pilot who was shot down over southern Austria in fall 1944 – endured during his Nazi captivity. Eric Johnson, a history professor at Central Michigan University, will briefly describe his haunting experiences during 10 years of research for a book that has received critical acclaim by media throughout the United States and Europe. Johnson interviewed hundreds of Germans and examined nearly 30,000 previously inaccessible and largely forgotten Third Reich records in the Rhineland area of Germany. His exhaustive study led to a sobering discov- ery: Most Germans knew about the deportation and slaughter of Jews but were simply indifferent.
