Hadassah Promotes Literacy The Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah is making a community gift of 200 books for young children assisted by volunteers and the stu- dents' classrooms. As part of the nationwide "America Reads Challenge," Hadassah members offer their time and efforts to promote literacy in local community schools. Throughout the school year, local Hadassah volunteers meet weekly to tutor or read to students through the Ferndale Literacy Program, Frost Elementary School ACE/HOSTS program in Pontiac and programs at Avery Elementary School in Oak Park and Ealy Elementary School in West Bloomfield. To assist the nationwide effort to teach young children to read and write, Hadassah, under the aegis of the U.S. Dept. of Education, has designed a tutoring manual. It is available to members, community tutoring groups, community partner coalitions and colleges or universities for their work-study programs. To obtain a copy of the free Read; Write, Now!
