drinking lemonade on their porches
and call a friendly greeting. You walk
at a leisurely pace, looking at every-
thing and nothing in particular.
Sounds so delightful, doesn't it,
like something right out of "The
Waltons"? Children would have a
word for it, too. Boring.
What they want is something to
do. So provide them with a magnify-
ing glass and a plastic bag and invite
them along for an Alphabet Walk.
Here's what they have to do:
Find a treasure for each letter of
the alphabet. For example:
A - acorn B - bird feather C -
(pine) cone D - dried flower. You will
have to be flexible, of course. No mat-
ter how brilliant your child is, she will
find it quite difficult to find an "X"
item. But let her use her imagination
and you might get an "Xtra"-special
flower or two branches twisted into
an X-like shape.
The Young Manet Just about every
artist, writer and poet has
been inspired in some way by
ia,AkAl nature. Your child will feel the
same if you provide him or
her with basic tools, like a nice, new
pen and pencil (for budding writers)
or an art set and paper, for those with
a passion for drawing. You may want
to select a favorite nearby scene, or try
something completely new (just get in
the car and go).
Even children not especially fond
of art are likely to enjoy sitting beside
a stream and working with a pretty
set of paints. Highly recommended:
Winsor & Newton's Cotman
WaterColours Gift Set, which
includes a painting box (with one
Cotman brush, 18 half pans [of
paint] and two tubes), an 8" x 5" pad
for painting, and an instruction book-
let).
If this is a great success, try return-
ing to the same site in the early morn-
ing, afternoon and evening, to capture
the scene in different light.
A Whole New World Michigan
is home to a wonderful collec-
tion of outdoor parks and
beaches and farms, almost all
of which are a less-than-two-
hour drive from metro Detroit. Here
are a few proven successes for chil-
dren of various ages:
