Gretchko described Dr. Drachler as studious, erudite, a careful speaker and a very cogent thinker. He never hesi- tated to make people aware of his Jewish background, incorporating Jewish stories and references into his speeches and conversations. Said Sol Drachler, "He was a patient, thoughtful, concerned parent. He addressed everything like that. He was slow-speaking, slow-paced — he smoked a pipe. Pipe smoke curled up slowly above the pipe. It fit his demeanor and his manner." Dr. Drachler was education director at Temple Israel, 1951-1965, and served as president of the National Association of Temple Educators. Many may remember him from his years at Camp Farband. "He was synonymous with Camp Farband," said Evelyne Freiman of Windsor, a camp counselor in the early 1950s. "He was an extremely efficient administrator. The place ran like clockwork." He left Detroit in 1971 to accept Institute for Educational Leadership positions at Washington University in Washington, D.C., and later Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. But he maintained his interest in Jewish edu- cation. It was after retirement that Dr. Drachler devoted 12 years to creating A Bibliography of Jewish Education in the United States, an award-winning, 800- page reference source with 15,000 list- ings. He saw it published at age 84. In his quest to complete the work, Dr. Drachler visited Jewish libraries across the country and relied on his own col- lection of 11,000 Jewish books. Dr. Drachler is survived by his wife, Evelyn Drachler; son and daughter-in- law David and Carole Drachler of Phoenix; daughter Ruth Drachler of New York; grandchildren Laura and Deryle House, Ethan Handel and Reuben Handel; brother and sister-in- law Sol and Leah Drachler of Southfield; son-in-law Warren Handel; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Beatrice and Boris Katz.
