Cites Lasorda.

The Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation will fete Tommy Lasorda
as winner of the Hank Greenberg
Memorial Achievement Award. The
annual award goes to the individual
who best exhibits the character
Greenberg exemplified during his life.
The award will be presented at the
10th annual Hank Greenberg
Memorial Golf and Tennis
Invitational on Monday, July 24, at
Tam O'Shanter Country Club in
West Bloomfield.
Lasorda has been part of the Los
Angeles Dodgers organization for
more than 50 years as a player, minor
league manager, coach, manager (for
20 years), general manager and, cur-
rently, senior vice president.
In 1997, he was elected to the
Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans
Committee in his first year of eligibility.
"Tommy Lasorda is truly one of
baseball's most popular personalities,"
said event co-chair Gary Sallen.
The Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation was founded in 1984 to
honor Jewish sports figures who have
distinguished themselves in Michigan.
Funds are raised annually to support
various charitable efforts, including
the Hank Greenberg Oncology Fund
at the Detroit Medical Center.
Last year's invitational brought a
gift to the oncology fund of
$402,000.
Other projects include the annual
Fame Games for developmentally dis-
abled persons and the granting of col-
lege and camp scholarships to local
students.
The MJSF is housed at the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield with plaques in the corri-
dors honoring the inductees.

Leila Kalley of Troy won two events
and placed second in all-around at the
level 6 girls' state gymnastics champi-
onships May 13 in Flint.
Kalley won balance beam and floor
exercise. She is a seventh-grader at
Cranbrook-Kingswood Middle School,
Bloomfield Hills, daughter of Arlene
and Terrence Kalley, and a member of
Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy.
