Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve (in
Rochester) includes a fun little
nature center where children can
study and hold all kinds of animal
artifacts, then buy flavored honey
and other tiny treats at a gift shop.
Behind the center is 16 acres filled
with trails into the woods. Note: The
name of the center comes from a
huge hill that resembles a dinosaur's
back. There are no dinosaurs here, in
case your children were hoping. For
information: (248) 656-0999.
Mott Farm (in Flint) is a delight-
ful little farm where children can pet

ride a steamboat, see cornmeal made
and enjoy old-fashioned amusement-
park rides like the Victorian Boats.

tion on Crossroads Village, call 1-

Potter Park Zoo (in Lansing) is
possibly the most charming zoo in

animals, including a petting farm
and pony rides, and the zoo itself is
huddled among lovely trees and
flowers. There's no entrance cost if
you're a member of the Detroit Zoo.

I'll Drink To That Back in the
a old days, people used to call a
summer day complete if they
could enjoy an ice-cold soda, then
read a good book or see the latest
movie (which, if you were in luck,
was in an air-conditioned theater).
If your children are 6 and older,
they'll love hearing you read — any-
thing from a Harry Potter adventure
to Little House on the Prairie. Serve
them up a soda and you'll be the
hippest cat in town.
And don't just take out a bottle of
Coke and vanilla ice cream. Check
out these recipes from Soda Fountain
Luncheonette Drinks and Recipes,
published in 1940.
HOLLYWOOD PARFAIT Into a
parfait glass, place a small dipper of
chocolate ice cream and sprinkle
with a scant soda spoon of mixed,
chopped candied fruit. Over this,
pour a little vanilla syrup and one
quartered marshmallow. Top this
with a small dipper of coffee ice
cream. Cover with a generous por-
tion of whipped cream, forced
through a pastry tube, in spiral
shape, and sprinkle the whipped
cream with finely chopped mixed
nut meats.
BROWN COW SHAKE Into
shaker draw 1 oz. chocblate
syrup; add enough undiluted .
evaporated milk to fill up shaker
to half, and fill up to 2/3 with
root beer. Add a little shaved
ice, and shake vigorously. Strain
into a 12 oz. glass, and dust
with chocolate shots. Serve with
straws.
Editor's Note: If you're looking

(including vintage recipes for
sandwiches and waffle toppings)
and can't find the recipe, please

be glad to send you a copy.
Starry, Starry Night For less
than $100, you can buy a fair-
;,›-N
& ly decent telescope at your
favorite nature or discount
store. Then all you have to do
is check out a book at the library
and look to the heavens to see the
beautiful night world around you.
