It was during the late 1800s when Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, a health nut, established the Battle Creek Sanitarium to provide sound food alternatives to his guests (at that time, most of the world was breakfasting on fat-laden foods). Kellogg's brother, Will Keith Kellogg, worked on the development of nutritious foods and in 1894, he stumbled on a way to create healthy flakes after he left grain out over- night. It had settled and, once he passed the grain through rollers, it became flakes. The boom began and from 1901 to 1904, some 40 cereal companies opened in Battle Creek. However, within a few years, only half of the companies remained. Today's home to our breakfast buddy — Tony the Tiger — also has its own version of "Honey I Shrunk the Kids." Don't want another grain of information on how cereal is made? Then head to the soft- play space for children under 48-inches tall.
