Detroit charter member is past president
Miriam Goldberg, whose sister Rhonda
Feldman, Chicago Friends of ALYN
president, worked six months in volun-
teer nursing at ALYN.
Arthur enlisted Goldberg and
Feldman's parents, Leonard and Ann
Baruch, to serve as contact persons.
"Scattered throughout Detroit, we dis-
covered there were a number of people
previously touched by ALYN in some
way," he says.
They even discovered their own fami-
ly connection between Klara Scheck,
Gina's Israeli aunt, and ALYN Director
Brenda Hirsch.
The Horwitzes acted as a catalyst,
and Arthur says the group rallied around
a cause they all knew and cared about.
On a very personal level at that time,

With her own family in mind, Gina
also thought of the children of ALYN,
disabled by trauma, surgery and disease.
Some of their parents gave them up,
and they've become wards of the state,
living at the hospital," she says.
Encouraged by her husband, Gina
knew she could, in part, be there for
them. Through the years, her involve-
ment has increased from member to vice
president and co-chair of last year's
ALYN fundraiser. "The time is right to
take over the presidency," she says of
next year.
"We always wanted to teach our chil-
dren that the world is not all rosy," Gina
says, and mentions the family's involve-

What ALYN Does

Founded in 1932, ALYN Hospital
in Jerusalem specializes in active
and intensive rehabilitation of chil-
dren with a broad range of physical
disabilities. It is the only pediatric
facility of its kind in Israel.
In Hebrew, ALYN it is an
acronym for Agudah Le'ezrat
Yeladim Nachim, meaning
Organization to Aid Handicapped
Children. In English, the letters
stand for All the Love You Need.
ALYN hospital provides care for
treating trauma and head injuries
from car accidents, neuromuscular
diseases, cerebral palsy, spina bifida,
congenital deformities, general pedi-
atric orthopedics and infants needing

intermediate ventilation and spe-
cial feeding management.
An active rehabilitation program
is implemented by intensive care
for comatose children and acute
spinal injuries, trauma and post-
surgical patients, including cancer
and burn victims, and rehabilita-
tion for children with physical and
developmental disabilities.
More than 5,000 children are
treated at ALYN each year, regard-
less of ethnic background or
nationality, with 70 percent of
them Jewish. The hospital has 93
hospitalization beds and 100 day-
patient beds; 265 employees pro-
vide services.
