borhood. "I remember [classmates] star- ing at handicapped kids. I didn't want my kids to do that." The Horwitzes also feel it is vital that their children visit ALYN. Arthur first toured the hospital as part of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Hadracha trip in 1991. He returned with Gina when they served as bus cap- tains on Michigan Miracle Mission I in 1993. Arthur went on a third visit in 1994, accompanied by son Daniel, now 16. This summer, 12-year-old Adam will travel with his parents; while nine-year- old Stephanie already is asking when her turn will come. Gina sees time spent with ALYN's children as uplifting. She describes them as "special, smiling kids. They are beau- tiful — you see through the disability," she says. "Those who visit are not depressed when they leave. They feel blessed there is a place like this to take care of the children." She says she wishes she could spend more time at ALYN. "If I were closer, I would want to be able to see the kids and have a special relationship with all of them — and so would my kids." Gina expresses gratitude for the ALYN staff. "They are there for the whole child. And they have so many dif-. ferent problems. Still, the children carry the Torah in their wheelchairs, bake challas on Shabbat and masquerade on Purim." With Israeli health insurance covering only 70 percent of the care of each hos- pitalized child, funds are raised in the United States and around the world. Detroit Friends of ALYN members gather tribute card donations all year, and hold one annual fund-raising event — this year's dinner is the 10th annual. Titled an "Enchanted Evening," the din- ner is chaired by Miriam Goldberg and Doris Blechman. Pleased to be part of such a good cause, Gina calls ALYN "a little jewel of a hospital that sits overlooking Jerusalem — a place that performs miracles." You can begin to repair the world by helping these children, she says. El Tax-deductible donations can be made to ALYN Hospital, P.O. Box 250573, West Bloomfield, MI 48325. The "Enchanted Evening" strolling dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Admission is $150 per person.
