AGENCY FOR JEWISH
EDUCATION
aise your hand if you went to Hebrew
school.
For a sizable percentage of Jewish adults, going to
Hebrew school was one of those rules of childhood:
Like it or not, you had to go.
Today the Agency for Jewish Education is turning
Hebrew school — or more accurately, religious school —
into a whole different ball game that any kid could
learn to play. And learn to love.
The programs designed by this Federation agency
have an impact on more than 8,000 children attending
nearly two dozen afternoon schools operated by
congregations and organizations, as well as day schools
and nursery schools.
What is AJE all about? It's about a growing emphasis on
teacher training and links to the exciting cyberworld of
Jewish education. It's about AJE programs like Jewish
Experiences for Families and family camping that enrich
Jewish life. It's about classes for newcomers to Judaism.
It's about a special education program,"Opening the
Doors," that puts kids with learning problems in touch
with their Jewish history and heritage.
There's a whole lot more going on these days at the
Agency for Jewish Education, where fresh ideas and
new ways of teaching just might turn kids — and their
elders — on to Jewish learning.
The AJE hopes an entire generation will find out that
Jewish education can be fun. So much that, one day,
no one will have to make a kid go to Hebrew school.
