In his short, legendary career, Mr.
Newman was All-American, All-Pro

He played on offense, defense and
special teams. Besides quarterback, he
was a pass defender, place-kicker and
kick and punt returner.
One of Mr. Newman's pro rushing
records -- 38 carries in a game —
stood for more than 40 years , until
broken by running back O.J.
Simpson, then of the Buffalo Bills. It
remains the quarterback record, never
to be challenged by modern-day, run-
shy passers.
Mr. Newman was a star football
player at Northern High School, but
made only two passes in his career
there. It was at summer 'camp in New
Hampshire that he met Benny
Friedman, a fellow counselor, U-M
star quarterback and future Giant.
"Benny Friedman taught my broth-
er just about everything he knew,"
said Herbert Newman of Fort
Lauderdale, Fla. "And my brother
later replaced Benny on the Giants."
