gun violence as an important concern
for the Reform movement in his bien-
nial address in Orlando at the 1999
convention of the UAHC, the syna-
gogue arm of the Reform movement.
In February, he instituted an
extended and comprehensive campaign
tide, "Swords Into Plowshares: How
You Can Join the UAHC's Campaign
to End Gun Violence," distributing it
to each of the UAHC's 886 Reform
congregations in the United States. It
includes legislative agendas on the
march, camera-ready bulletin ads, litur-
gical materials for the Shabbat before
the march and relevant Jewish source
texts for sermon materials, educational
lesson plans and a list of regional, state
and local march coordinators.
"I think the march is potentially a
very important cause," he says, urging
congregations to send delegations,
with the UAHC office helping to
coordinate travel.
"Periodically, a people must decide
what it stands for, and what it will
tolerate," Rabbi Yoffie says. "Surely,
now is such a time. Now is the time
to assemble a critical mass of citizens
who will stand up and say 'no' to the
deadly toll that guns take on the lives
of our children." O
