S

keptics dismiss it as a publicity
stunt. But that's shortsighted
because the Million Mom March has
remarkable potential.
A million moms — along with rela-
tives, friends and others — will con-
verge on our nation's capital Sunday to
rally for tougher gun laws to protect

their children's lives.

the stage, from a Jewish perspective, for
this grassroots assault on indiscriminate
pulling of the trigger. Staff Writer Shelli Liebman Dorfman,
working under Story Development Editor Keri Guten
Cohen, provides an overview of local participation.
The media will saturate us with coverage of the march.
And debate will rage about how much gun control we
really need.
The real effect of this super-sized flexing of mom
power, however, lies in how intensely we address the
social, economic and cultural forces that compel children
to act on impulse and use a gun to kill.
I have high regard for the folks giving up their Mother's
Day for a cause in which they believe. But what happens
when they return home represents the ultimate barometer.
Over the long haul, we must build a unified front against
the root causes of aberrant behavior — television violence,
drug influences and peer pressure, to name three.
Otherwise, memories of the march will fade at the same
time that pain from people of all ages being killed grows.
