award was created
Lynn Rivers
to recognize and
thank individuals
in the public arena who have
demonstrated special dedication to
improving the lives of people with
mental illness.
Rivers announced her 24-year battle
with manic-depressive illness in the
final days of the 1994 campaign. She
spoke at a White House forum on
mental illness about her struggle to find
the right regimen to bring her condi-
don under control. She was the recipi-
ent of the 1999 Disability Awareness
Award and named 1998 Legislator of
the Year by both the National Alliance
for the Mentally Ill and also the
National Mental Health Association.
