A two-minute siren wailed at exact- ly 11 a.m. in front of the Jewish Community Center's D. Dan and Betty Kahn Building to begin Detroit's commemoration ceremony. Some 50 people listened to poetry read by Yeshivat Akiva students and short speeches, then watched as Joshua Berkowitz, Michigan Friends of the Israel Defense Forces president, and Mark Myers, community shaliach, laid two wreaths at the memorial for fallen Israeli soldiers. After singing "Hatikva," some lined up single-file to place 30 carnations — bearing the names of Israeli soldiers with links to the community — on the memorial. Later in the evening, some 350 gathered in Marion and David Handleman Hall to hear Israeli songs offered by the Zamir Chorale of Metropolitan Detroit, and poetry readings. Both events were co-spon- sored by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and the Michigan Friends of the IDF. "Yom HaZikaron was specially declared on the day prior to Independence Day, leaving opportuni- ty to honor those who gave their lives in defense of the State of Israel," said Israeli Lt. Col. Mordechai Berkovich, who serves as assistant military attache for technology and logistics in the Israel Embassy in Washington. "On this Memorial Day, we give tribute to the memory of the 19,109 soldiers — men and women, from all services of the armed forces — who lost their lives." In the past, Israel did not have the money to buy all of the latest defen- sive systems, so they made their own, accordinc, to their need, Lt. Col. Berkovich b said. Citing Israeli-made tanks, anti-tank missiles and military satellites as the best in the world, he assured the crowd that at present, the IDF and the United States are "equal partners" in high-tech weapons.
