you, Lord, who will revive the
dead." Rabbi Bitran said there is an
English translation in the prayer
books that is less direct, such as the
one in the Conservative prayer book
that reads, "Praised are you, Lord,
master of life and death."
"We recite such things every day
[but] we don't emphasize the world
to come. We emphasize the life we
are living now," he said.
Rabbi Shapero of Ohr Somayach
said that those who study the mysti-
cal teachings see the idea of return-
ing to refine the soul and to learn
new lessons as an important, almost
central idea.
"In mystical lore [reincarnation]
is a very pronounced concept, like
elevating the soul," Rabbi Shapero
said. "The idea is that life has a pur-
pose. Each person is to fulfill that
purpose by making contributions to
the world that need to be made. You
might have the chance to fulfill it
again if you do not do so in this
life."
Dr. Alicia Tisdale, a psychologist
who is a member of one of Temple
Israel's founding families, does past-
life regressive therapy. She said she
finds many people who are receptive
to the idea both in the clinical and
Judaic world. Dr. Tisdale, one of the
organizers of the teleconference, said
that many of her clients specifically

seek her out because they feel a par-
ticular psychological hurdle can only
be overcome by revisiting a life led
in the past.
"While I work with many families
and children with traditional thera-
py, many people come to me just for
[past life therapy]," she said. "They
come to me to do spiritual healing."
Dr. Tisdale, who is making
arrangements with Dr. Samuel
Klein, said she is happy to play a
part in bringing this teleconference
to the community. She sees the
event as a way of beginning discus-
sion on the subject of past-life
regression therapy and reincarnation
for those interested in exploring it.
"I don't force the idea on anyone,"
she said. "But there are a lot of peo-
ple who want to learn about it." ❑

The Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's Max M.
Fisher Foundation is providing
a partial grant for the telecon-
ference. Tickets are $20 at the
door or may be purchased in
advance by calling Ohr
