The president-elect added, "I want-
ed a chance to make NFTY as amaz-
ing an experience for others as I have
had. It has been some of the most
important years of my life."
NFTY represents 15 affiliated
reform synagogues in southeast
Michigan, Jackson, Grand Rapids and
Muskegon.
The duties for the seven members
of the regional board include writing
programs for each region's kallot and
organizing and supervising interchap-
ter events.
Kander's goals as president
include making the board more
accessible. "I want to make sure
everyone is getting what is wanted
out of NFTY and that promises are
carried through. I also want to make
sure that all networks in local
boards work closely to utilize the
previous experiences to shape what
they need for their youth groups."
Lisa Kander, Jake's mother, said,
"We know how much work is
involved in his new position. He has
been very involved all along with
youth activities. He is very responsible
and very involved in Judaism. He will
have a great year."
Kander was a member of Temple
Beth El in Flint, where. he celebrated
his bar mitzvah and confirmation. For
the past year, his family has belonged
to Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy.
He remains active in both congrega-
tions.
At Shir Tikvah, he is a tutor for
fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders
through the family education pro-
gram. He works one-on-one with
students in reading and learning
prayers.
Naomi Choinard, interim coordi-
nator of family education at Shir
Tikvah, said Jake is a natural leader.
She called him "very hard working
and dedicated."
Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg called
Kander "a pillar of the Shir Tikvah
community. I am pleased he has come
forward to. volunteer his well-devel-
oped leadership skills for youths in
our state."
At the Ivriah of Flint, Kander is a
Hebrew teaching assistant and song
leader. He also is song leader for the
Troy Area Temple Youth (TATY) at
Shir Tikvah and for NFTY/Michigan
Region.
Ken Kander said his son "has been
playing guitar for three-four years. He
