MAIL DEPT ... via e-mail from
Sharon Rocklin ... on "getting it
straight about Flashenberg's"
"I am the granddaughter of Pauline
and Abe Flashenberg who owned
Flashenberg's Delicatessen on
Linwood, between Monterey and
Richton. Mertz' Bakery shared a corn-
mon wall on the south side, and there
was a vacant lot and a shul on the
north side. Because 'the store' was
closer to Roosevelt Elementary than
my home, my grandmother met me in
front of Hanny's, at Linwood and
Burlingame, every day after school
until I was in the fourth grade. While
other children sat in their family
kitchen having cookies and milk, I
was perched on a barrel in the restau-
rant kitchen eating rye bread and
pickles.
"My grandfather wore a hearing
aid, and when groups of noisy Central
High School students came in on their
way home, he would often turn it off.
My grandmother made all the
coleslaw, potato salad and pickled fish.
All corned beef was cooked in a
steamer behind the counter.
'After several years of sole owner-
ship, my grandfather took on a part-
ner whose name was Jerry Stein.
When my grandfather's failing health
forced him to retire in 1955, Jerry
kept the delicatessen and continued to
run it under the name Flashenberg's."
