RISTORANTE

came up with his approach after being
married to a wool weaver who was
raising sheep. "I'm primarily a gold-
smith, but I have been doing some
work with black pearls and occasional
stones."
Golder became interested in mak-
ing jewelry while taking college classes
in a variety of curriculums from pre-
med to industrial design.
"My grandfather had a jewelry store

in Florida, and I hung around and
absorbed everything," recalls the artist,
whose work has been shown at a sub-
urban Detroit gallery. "When I got to
college, I did some casting, and that
began my jewelry career 30 years ago."
Although Judaica is not part of the
jewelry cache he will be bringing to
Birmingham, Golder has accepted
Judaica projects, including a Torah
pointer for the Hebrew Union College
in Cincinnati and a container for
spices inhaled during Havdala services
at the close of Sabbath.
"A lot of people ask me if I changed
my name because of my profession,
but it's the same last name my grandfa-
ther had in Russia," the artist reveals.
"The language he spoke did not con-
nect that word to gold as a metal." ❑
