Dr. Rachel Birtha Eitches, an African-American Jewish convert; Dr. Marjorie Cramer, an Irish-Catholic- born plastic surgeon who converted to Judaism and practices as a mohel; choreographer Liz Lerman, currently in the midst of a residency program at the University of Michigan; Dr. Roslayn Sussman Yalow, the first American woman trained in physics to win a Nobel Prize; and cookbook author Joan Nathan also appear. "We wanted a cross section of Jewish women with strong Jewish val- ues," says Wolfson, who interviewed television star Shari Lewis before her death from lung cancer. "She talked about people coming up to her and thanking her for the wonderful Christian values she [instilled]," Wolfson recalls. But Lewis replied that they were Jewish values, too, notes Wolfson. One of the writer's most emotional interviews was with Dr. Carolyn Goodman, mother of Andrew Goodman, the slain civil rights worker. "Meeting her was a very powerful experience," says Wolfson. "She has spent her whole life dedicating her efforts to the legacy of youth activism in America." Photographer Lloyd Wolf, a Conservative Jew who, like Wolfson, resides in Arlington, Va., also found meeting Goodman to be an emotional experience. "I photographed her twice and took her to the gravesite where her son is buried," he says. "There was a bond of trust between us that occurred at that time and I won't ever forget it." Wolf says several of the women touched him deeply. "Photographing Sue Willis, the woman who won a reli- gious harassment suit in Alabama, had a terrific impact," he says. "Her story was very moving and sad. Her children suffered terrible antisemitism." Both Wolfson and Wolf hope their book will appeal to an audience beyond Jewish readers. "I hope it's read by all Americans," says Wolfson. "I want people to learn that many of the struggles faced by Jewish women are the same struggles that other mothers face. I also want them to appreciate the beauty and joy of Jewish tradition."
