When Haidar Bitan of Dearborn
blamed Peres for the murder of his
two children during the bombing of a
Palestinian refugee camp in Qana,
Lebanon, in 1996, Peres replied, "I
want to express my sympathy for your
loss, but you ask the wrong person.
Why did your people allow Hezbollah
to shell Israel day in and day out for
seven days during Passover?
"The question is: 'Does Lebanon
exist or is Lebanon under Syrian occu-
pation in one place, and under
Hezbollah management under another
place?"' he asked, adding that United
Nations forces "permitted mortars next
to a shelter, and did not inform us."
Peres' invitation to speak at the uni-

Community Council of Metropolitan
Detroit, the Jewish Fund and the
Detroit Council for World Affairs.

Correction
In "Life Unworthy of Life" (April
28, page 17), the sentence about
the number of students using the
locally written Holocaust curricu-
lum text should have read: "Over
the past 10 years, more than
125,000-150,000 students have
used 'Life Unworthy of Life' in
Michigan alone, with thousands
more nationwide." Also, Fay
Rotberg, the mother of Betty
Rotberg Ellias, is still alive.
