Synagogue member Prof Martin
Herman of Detroit, a musicologist,
sharing a love of music and liturgy.
The cantor often would incorporate a
familiar operatic melody into the ser-
vice, where permitted.
Synagogue member David Powell
of Detroit said, "Cantor Idelsohn
had this very deep, very soulful
voice. He knew so many different
melodies, and you always waited in
anticipation of hearing something
new or different."
At the funeral, Rabbi Noah
Gamze of Downtown Synagogue
praised the cantor for his two
decades of dedication to the syna-
gogue. "He was a fighter," said the
rabbi. "He took seriously his com-
mitment to his people, to his coun-
try and to his friends."
Cantor Idelsohn was a founder of
the Evergreen Jewish Congregation
in northwest Detroit in 1954, and
served as cantor for its first five
years. He later served in the choir of
Congregation Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses and studied under the late
Cantor Israel Fuchs. It was Cantor
Idelsohn who prodded Cantor
Fuchs to publish his life's work of
original melodies in 1994.
An outgoing man with a great
sense of humor, Cantor Idelsohn
was Michigan president of the
National Exchange Club, a service
organization founded to prevent
child abuse.
He served in the Latvian army for
a year prior to World War II, and
for nearly five years in the U.S.
Army during the war. His fluency in
seven languages made him invalu-
able as an interpreter for the army
in Europe.
Sylvia Idelsohn, the cantor's wife
of 59 years, said, "Being a cantor
was his greatest wish. When he did
get a steady position at Downtown
Synagogue he was admitted to the
Cantors Assembly. My daughter
said, 'Dad, you're a late bloomer.'"
Cantor Idelsohn is survived by his
wife, Sylvia; son, Charles Idelsohn of
Detroit; and daughter, Enid R.
Idelsohn of Charleston, S.C.
