Women To Focus
On Weapons

Control

Three days before many of its
members join the Million Mom
March in Washington, Women's
Action for New Directions will
hold its 13th annual Mothers
Peace Day Award breakfast.
The WAND breakfast begins
at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 11,
at the Community House in
Birmingham, 380 S. Bates.
Keynote speaker Kathryn
Bowers, WAND national presi-
dent and a Tennessee lawmaker,
will speak on Abolition 2000, a
worldwide movement to ban
nuclear weapons. She'll address
the need for better gun-control
legislation.
"Women are passionate about
the safety of children, as evi-
denced by the Million Mom
March (Sunday, May 14), which
WAND is co-sponsoring," said
Arlene Victor of Bloomfield
Township, WAND incoming
local president.
"The issue of American gun
violence is visible and immedi-
ate. But it is a reflection of the
less visible, though very real
dangers, posed to our children
now and on into future genera-
tions by the violence of weapons
of mass destruction."
Victor added, "Women's val-
ues must be part of the deci-
sions made about national secu-
rity, in all of its aspects."
At the breakfast, WAND will
honor women who have used
the political arena to find peace-
ful solutions to conflict and
promoted human and environ-
mental needs. Honorees are
members of WAND and its sis-
ter group, WILL (Women
Legislators Lobby). They
include state Rep. Gilda Z.
Jacobs, D-Huntington Woods.
WAND's mission is to
empower women to act politi-
cally to reduce militarism and
violence and to redirect exces-
sive military resources to human
and environmental needs.
