The Best Of Everything

the halls during its
first year of opera-
tion ... (approxi-
mately 250,000 —
averaging 5,000 a
week) Sammy
Lieberman planned
a remodeling cam-
paign for the
Raleigh House on Telegraph ... He
went to the Furniture Show in
Chicago for new furniture, carpeting
and drapes to remodel and freshen the
Raleigh House decor ... All this after
only being open a year.
The Raleigh House went on to
become one of the largest and most
beautiful catering spots in the nation,
encompassing every facet of catering
imaginable ... from weddings and bar
mitzvahs to banquets to Ford, Chevy,
Buick and Chrysler doings to massive
political.campaigns and Las Vegas
hotel shindigs ... An affair ... any kind
... at the Raleigh house was automatic
prestige.
IN BEVERLY HILLS, Calif,
Gordon Roth was one of 16 counter-
men working at Nate & Al's
Delicatessen ... Certainly no shortage
of help for owner Al Mendelson, a
former Detroiter.
BEEF SIDES cut up and put in
plastic bags to age for 21 days in their
own moisture instead of drying out ...
This was the new process used at
Berman's Chop House on Times
Square ... It made the meat extraordi-
narily tender.
The name Berman's was also listed
on other Ben Kasle properties ... In
Warren, it became Berman's Executive
Inn Restaurant ... And in Flint,
Berman's Cork '11 Cleaver Chop
House ... His Uncle John's Pancake
Houses remained the same.
SKANDIA ON the Lodge Service
Drive was an education ...
Smorgasbord dining properly done at
Skandia was a treat ... putting every-
thing on the plate at one time was cer-
tainly not the thing to do ... The right
way for leisurely enjoyable dining at
Skandia was an exciting adventure ... if
people ate like its Scandinavian-born or
reared owners wanted them to.
FAVORITE STORIES ... by Dick
Lichtman, owner of Northgate
Delicatessen on Greenfield in Oak
Park ... about the woman driving
along a country road when noticing
several linemen climbing a telephone
pole ... "Silly fools," she remarked to
her companion. "They must think I've
never driven before."
A LOT OF TALK had Darbys
