Comprehensive Breast
Center, located in the
Barbara Ann Karmanos
Cancer Institute in Detroit, was
dedicated on April 27. More than
400 patrons attended the ceremony.
"This is the fulfillment of a
dream and the celebration of a new
journey," said Dr. William Peters,
dire- ctor of the Karmanos Cancer
Institute. "The Alexander J. Walt
Comprehensive Breast Center is an
extraordinary testimony to an extra-
ordinary man," he added.
The late Dr. Walt, a South
African Jew who died in 1996, grad-
uated from the University of Cape
Town in 1948. He received his med-
ical training in London and at the
Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Dr. Walt

served as chief of surgery at both
Detroit Receiving and Harper hospi-
tals. He was chair of the surgery
department at Wayne State
University School of Medicine and a
past president of the American
College of Surgeons.
Many colleagues, students,
patients and family members attend-
ed the dedication in memory of a
man that put his patients first.
"This is the culmination of Alex's
dream," said Irene Walt, widow of
the late Dr. Walt and art adviser for
the breast cancer center.
So patients could be in a calming
place of beauty, she commissioned
many art pieces by local artists,
including Marjorie Hecht, Glen
Michaels and Joseph Wesner.
Rosemary Gilchrist chaired the •
dedication event, with the assistance
of co-chairs Debra Glendening-
Karmanos and Lila Silverman.
Some of the supporters included

Marlene and Paul Borman, Olga
and Iry Dworkin, Doreen and
David Hermelin, Pat Rosen, Wendy
Hubert, Harriet Alpern, Sandy
