olden Gloves amateur boxing events hold
fond memories for Bloomfield Hills resi-
dent Glenn Hirsch, 49.
"My father used to take me to the
Golden Gloves in New York, at Madison Square
Garden," Hirsch recalls. "I used to really enjoy that.
That's one of the few memories I have of him
because I traveled and left home at 20, when I moved
to Atlanta."
Just a few years later, Charles "Sunny" Hirsch
died. So, when Glenn Hirsch had an opportunity to
become a Golden Gloves official, he jumped in,
inspired by his dad's memory.
Today, Hirsch is president of the Golden Gloves of
Metropolitan Detroit. He's helping to coordinate the
National Golden Gloves Tournament, which began with
preliminaries on April 30 and concludes with the cham-
pionship bouts on Saturday, May 6, at Joe Louis Arena.
"I keep thinking about my father through all of
this," Hirsch says. 'And I still do, and it's been 28
years ... I'm helping kids on his behalf"

Hirsch was born on Long Island and grew up in
Brooklyn. The clothing business eventually took him
to Atlanta, Cleveland and, finally, Detroit. He mar-
ried a Detroiter, Shellye Korash, and remained in the
area rather than move with his company to
Minneapolis.
Hirsch now owns Source Real Estate Investment Co.
in Southfield. He and his wife have a son, Andrew, 25,
and a granddaughter, Samantha.
Hirsch entered boxing 10 years ago when Dr. Stuart
Kirschenbaum, then Michigan's boxing commissioner,
got Hirsch interested in judging pro boxing.
Hirsch learned the judging trade and is now a
world-class boxing official, flying across the globe to
score major fights, including championship bouts.
While he developed his judging skills, Hirsch met
Metro Detroit's Golden Gloves officials and began
working with them. He served as the organization's
secretary before becoming president.
Hirsch wants the organization to do more than
just teach kids how to fight.
"When kids fill out applications to be in the
Golden Gloves we also have them fill out a personal
profile," Hirsch explains. "We ask if they need a job
