Wyoming to 10 Mile and Southfield
... far from the truth ... The restaurant
that opened there was called the
Rascal House ... a 160-seater.
EVERYBODY SEEMED to try,
but very few ever succeeded, in
stumping pianist Joel Nash in the
cocktail lounge at Hotel St. Regis ...
His bag of melodies was so large that
stumping him was a real chore.
THERE WAS ALWAYS a lot of
activity going on at the Circus Lounge
on Greenfield and West Chicago ...
Much fun, music and dancing in a
lively atmosphere of frivolous enjoy-
ment ... But the one time most people
remembered was when the owner, Lou
Stone, knocked out a customer on the
dance floor.
POSTCARD THAT CAME from
Dr. Harry and Ellen Woll, vacationing
in Mexico ... "The eating places here
serve everything but Mexican food!"
EWE'S DELICATESSEN on West
Seven Mile, east of Schaefer, was there
a long time ... with many different
names ... it originally opened as
Northwest Delicatessen, owned by
Morris Rider and Morris Rubin ...
Then Leon Siegel and Sam Lefkofsky
changed the name to Leon and
Leflcofsky's ... And Al Winkler called it
Al's Pumpernickel Palace.
ON FARMER Street, the
Delmonico Restaurant was designed
to be reminiscent of the Diamond Jim
Brady days ... It even had red carpet-
ing on the outside ... rain or snow.
ON PARK, between Columbia and
Montcalm, the Clover Club wasn't a
very big place ... In fact, it wasn't even
a beautiful spot ... But a lot of fun in
an honest, down-to-earth atmosphere
... Owner Max Lobel had created an
interesting air of informality ... and
Don Hill tickled the keys in an inti-
mate lounge area.
AT THE SHRINE Circus, where
both devoted Shriners toiled for
Crescent Shrine, Max Raimi had
restaurateur Victor Lim in stitches
with the column's story about the
Chinese gent name of. Sam Schwartz
working in a laundry ... Customers
asked him how he got the name of
Sam Schwartz, and the Chinese fellow
told him how, when he came to this
country, he stood in line at the immi-
gration counter ... The man in front
of him was asked his name and
replied, "Sam Schwartz" ... When it
was the Chinese gent's turn, he
answered, "Sam Ting" ... The immi-
gration officer thought he said "same
thing" ... and that's how he came to
have the name of Sam Schwartz! ❑
